Amor TOWLES is an American Novelist born, raised in Boston and best known for his bestselling novels "Rules of Civility" (2011) and “A Gentleman in Moscow”, the latter of which made him a finalist for the 2016 KIrkus Prize.  He graduated from Yale College, Stanford University and was then set to teach for two years in China.  From 1991-2012, he worked as an investment banker.  But "The Rules of Civility" was successful beyond his expectations, so much so that the proceeds from the book afforded him the luxury of retirement from investment banking and the opportunity to pursue writing full-time.

“A GENTLEMAN IN MOSCOW” is the story of Count Alexander Rostov, a Russian nobleman who, after the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917, is sentenced to lifelong imprisonment in Moscow’s Metropol Hotel. The Count must adjust not only to his new circumstances in a small room in the hotel’s belfry but also to the knowledge that his way of life is disappearing under the Bolshevik regime. As the years pass, the Count witnesses his Country changing outside his window, and he must learn to reconcile these changes with the past he holds dear. However, his time in the hotel teaches him lessons he would not have learned otherwise, explores personal growth, the inevitability of change, and the nature of government and power. The novel illustrates how people’s lives are intertwined and how the present can be informed but not mired by the past ...

Once a month,  you are invited to join our evening Reading Group get-together, to discuss the book-of-the-month, which is written by an American or Canadian author.  We meet in the Brussels area, on the second Wednesday of the month, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

We often share a meal together while sharing views on the book-of-the-month!  And also, info about good reads we have enjoyed.  All contributions to the conversation are welcome!
