AWCB dedicated volunteer Julie Kmet spearheaded our Back to School Supply Drive again this year, which is in support of NASCI vzw, a service center for underprivileged children, women, and families of Brussels. Our AWCB membership has been extremely generous as usual and donated 2 overflowing carloads filled with backpacks, folders, school supplies, hygiene materials, clothes, baby strollers, sporting goods, and toys. All items were well received by the smiling Nasci team and immediately put into piles for the designated families.

The Back to School Drive enables dozens of children and families to start the school year confidently with the right school supplies and personal hygiene.

Many thanks to all the members who donated to this worthwhile cause! If you still would like to donate to Nasci, they are asking for monetary donations, which can be done here: Donations.

    Upcoming FAWCO Events

September 8, 19:00 – Global Issues Book Discussion Series
The next book in the Global Issues Book Discussion Series is the Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, by William Kamkwamba. The book showcases the importance of education and literacy as well as libraries. William tells the story of how he studied books in the school library and then cobbled together from spare items an electrical system for his home and then a windmill to pump water. The book was also chosen because of its discussion of environmental issues, including a devastating drought in Malawi. Register online.

    September 14, 18:00 – Menopause & You
Night sweats, unwanted weight gain, mood swings, brain fog, anxiety, as well as about 514 other symptoms. Are you asking yourself if you just have to get on with it and endure it on your own? Are you finding it hard to cope? Are you one of the millions of women who every day need a little support to understand what is happening to your body?

Does this sound familiar to you? Then please join us in a talk with Jessika Luther, nurse, midwife and menopause coach. We will be discussing how we can find renewed energy, ourselves again, and see menopause as the change it is - mid-life can be marvelous! Jessika is soon 60 years old, Finnish, and an eternal student who thinks women deserve to feel good in their own bodies and mind and find their own strengths without feeling stressed out while doing it.

November 8, 19:00 – Global Issues Book Discussion Series
Please join us as we welcome the Author Silvia Vasquez-Lavado to discuss her book In the Shadow of the Mountain. A unique opportunity to meet the author and hear more about her inspiring and amazing memoir. Silvia Vasquez-Lavado is a Peruvian-American who conquered the Seven Summits that mountaineers strive to achieve. Truly remarkable about her achievement is how her courage took her from a sexually abused child in Lima, to the heights of a Silicon Valley career and finally to the top of the world with feats of physical and mental strength. Silvia's achievements are inspiring for all who fear they can not overcome. Her achievements are long, her courage is endless and her compassion is inspiring.

October is breast cancer awareness month. A highlight on the AWCB calendar, our fundraiser luncheon helps to support breast cancer research. This year, as last year, we will sponsor BIG, Breast International Group, a Brussel based non-profit international research group collaborating on cures and treatment. Check out BIG's website to learn more.

Our luncheons for this cause are epic, the energy electrifying and the enthusiasm of our volunteers is contagious. Each year we hope to top our previous year's donation so please come and join us for not only a delicious lunch and inspiring speakers but also the silent auctions and more. The luncheon will be held at the Royal Country Riding Clubhouse restaurant in Overijse.

We are also requesting donations form our members for items to add to the silent auction. So please have a look through your closets and cupboards for that under appreciated treasure you know could go to a great cause. Please contact Jennifer Constantino at Jennifer@AWCB.org for more information.

This summer Club President Lorraine De Bock attended the 78th Anniversary ceremony commemorating the Allied Landings in Provence from August 15, 1944. Lorraine and her husband Marc were invited by the local mayor and they donated a wreath on behalf of the AWCB to honor the American and Allied fallen soldiers of Operation Dragoon which took place on August 15th, 2022 in Sainte-Maxime, France.

Lorraine said it was a very touching ceremony that was well attended - not just by the locals, but also by American, Canadian, British and French organizations of veterans as well as the mayor of Sainte-Maxime, Vincent Morisse who was very appreciative and honored by our wreath. We thank Lorraine and her husband for making time during their vacation to attend this wonderful event and for giving AWCB a chance to honor these fallen heroes!

In addition, Lorraine and her husband visited the Rhône American Military Cemetery and Memorial in Draguignan, France to honor and pay respect to the American soldiers who sacrificed their lives to liberate Southern France during the Allied Landings in Provence (Operation Dragoon) on August 15, 1944.

Eight hundred and sixty American heroes are buried in this cemetery and it is very peaceful with beautifully maintained grounds.

Lorraine said it was truly a touching tribute and moving experience for both of them as they reflected on all of the brave heroes who gave so much for our freedom. May we never forget.

The AWCB/ACB 4th of July BBQ at Étangs des Mallaerts was amazing! It was a beautiful day full of friends, fun and great BBQ in a beautiful outdoor location - and the weather could not have been better!  In addition to having a great time, the club also raised over 700 euros with a raffle for Lina’s project, which is a charity that our beloved member, Nancy Evans holds close to her heart. We would like to thank all of our amazing volunteers from AWCB and ACB who supported the event. We can’t wait for 7/4 next year to do it all again!!!

I am obsessed with figs and I’m very lucky to have a neighbor who let’s me pick as many figs off of his tree as long as I make him fig jam. I’d like to share an easy and tasty recipe for fig jam that goes well with bread, cheese and crackers. Enjoy!

    INGREDIENTS

    • 1 pound of figs, quartered and stems removed
    • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
    • 1/4 cup water
    • 2 tablespoons of lemon juice (juice of 1 small lemon)
    • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract (optional)

In a large, heavy-bottomed saucepan, combine the figs, sugar, lemon juice.

Bring to a simmer over medium-low heat, stirring constantly. Cover and simmer over low heat for 25 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Let jam cool for 5-10 minutes and then spoon into 1/2 pint jars leaving 1/4 inch of space at the top. Close the jars and let cool to room temperature. Store the jam in the refrigerator for up to 2 months.

AWCB is hosting a Back to School Supply Drive with NASCI vzw, which is a service center for underprivileged children, women, and families of Brussels. We are asking our members to do some summer cleaning and donating. Many children and families will start school this year without proper supplies, clothes, or hygiene. We would like to make their lives a bit easier and get off to a great start this school year!

Joyce Kedzuf Mostinckx is a great fan of the Keukenhof Tulip Festival. This year again, she and her husband Marc went to see the two-hours long parade which follows a 42 kilometre route. Well organised as Joyce always is, they arrived early to beat the crowd and sat comfortably on folding chairs to enjoy the spectacle and take photos. The floats are totally amazing, all with different themes. Here are some examples.

After a delay of 2 years due to the covid pandemic, the Federation of American Women’s Clubs Overseas (FAWCO), finally had its bi-annual conference in Luxembourg this month. It was well attended by Women’s Club members from across the globe including our own FAWCO Representative Michelle Vanderstraaten, as well as AWCB Board members Lorraine De Bock, Ariadna Martinez, and Jennifer Constantino. This was an incredible opportunity to learn more of what FAWCO offers. The group gained inspiration and had an invaluable chance to exchange ideas and share resources along with making useful connections.

Our members learned more about the FAWCO Target Projects, including that focused on eliminating FGM. We had the privilege of hearing a speech by Rhobi Samwelly, FGM survivor and director of Hope for Girls and Women Tanzania, and learned about what FAWCO is doing and how its efforts have made an impact on ending FGM worldwide. For more information see the website.

Your membership to the AWCB automatically makes you a member of FAWCO. But what does this mean to you and to our club? FAWCO is our umbrella organization that connects us not only to other Women’s Clubs but also to the work FAWCO does at the American and international levels. FAWCO is a United Nations accredited NGO with special status to consult on the UN’s Economic and Social Council. Its focus is on issues concerning women and children in the areas of education, environment, health and human rights. FAWCO, the AWCB, and our sister clubs around the world all share a passion for improving the world in which we live now and for future generations. To learn more about the action being taken behind all the encouraging words, go to the How We Work page.

At the Luxembourg conference, AWCB members learned about FAWCO initiatives and how our club can be involved. One example is The Welcoming Project, which works to increase inclusiveness for all. In addition to the FAWCO Education Awards, the FAWCO youth program encourages expat children to gain cultural understanding and raise awareness of global issues. This is a wonderful opportunity for our youth to learn more about the UN and get involved.

Another project is The Cultural Volunteer Program, which is looking for clubs to host teens to experience 3-5 cultural and volunteering events over a set number of days. If you would like to get involved in making this a reality for the AWCB, please contact Michelle or Heather Bloemperk, your AWCB FAWCO representatives, to find out more (Michelle@awcb.org or Heather@awcb.org).

Another initiative is The Clubs in Motion project encouraging members to stay physically fit. Find out more about this worthwhile and fun project. We are looking for someone to oversea the AWCB’s contribution so if you are interested, again, get in touch with Heather or Michelle.

AWCB members won silent and live auctions contributing over 1.600 euros to FAWCO!

The AWCB gains a great deal of encouragement, expertise and guidance from the FAWCO global community and supports us in ways that would be much less effective on our own. The 2022 Luxembourg Conference inspired a sense of belonging to something much wider than our own women’s club and you are encouraged, during your global travels, to seek out other FAWCO member clubs to learn from and share in our global experience.

And finally, another important and valuable part of FAWCO is FAUSA, the arm of FAWCO that supports FAWCO members repatriating back to the USA and Canada. Repatriation is never a simple transition, especially after many years living in an international environment. FAUSA offers support and friendship during this time and allows our members to maintain the friendships they’ve made through their clubs and FAWCO and stay connected to their international life. For more information go to the FAUSA website.
